Schynige Platte – Cog Rail to Alpine Garden
This nostalgic La Belle Epoch cog-wheel rack railway, first opened
in 1893, is owned by the Berner Oberland Bahn and makes a 50 minute trip
from Wilderswil to Schynige Platte, an Alps plateau at 6453 feet altitude.
The 4.5 mile long scenic line via Breitlauenen Alp operates in summer
months from May to October and does not run in the winter. At the top
of the route is the Botanical Alpine Garden with 600 species of flowering
plants, the Teddyland play area for children and alpine hiking trails
with views of the Eiger,Monch and Jungfrau. It is possible to stay overnight
at the Schynige Platte mountain hotel at the top of the route. The hotel
was built in 1899, with spacious rooms and a restaurant. Rail and hotel
packages are offered.
The train cars are classic era newly updated stock in red and gold livery
with wooden bench seating in a single class. The Schynige Platte Railway
connects with the main line of the Berner Oberland Bahn (BOB) at the
Wilderswil station between Interlaken Ost and Lauterbrunnen. Ticket cost
is 35 CHF one way and 60 CHF return. A family deal is offered through
the season during the whole season, two children to age 15 travel free
to Schynige Platte with each adult purchasing a ticket. The offer is
also valid for grandparents with grandchildren and godparents. Swiss
Pass gets a 50% reduction and Eurail Rail Passes a 25% reduction for
the Schynige Platte Rail route.
