JUNGFRAU REGION RAILWAYS
Mürrenbahn – Lauterbrunnen-Murren
Mountain Railway
The Bergbahn Lauterbrunnen-Mürren (BLM) is a mountain railway of
the Jungfrau Region of the Bernese Oberland of Switzerland, connecting
the Alpine villages of Lauterbrunnen with Mürren (and the Schiltorn-Piz
Gloria aerial cable). The first section from Lauterbrunnen to Grutschalp
is by cable car, and the route to Murren is by train. The route was first
opened in 1891 and the original funicular up from the valley floor was
replaced with a cable car in 2006. It’s a relatively short trip,
only about 4 miles in total distance, but with very scenic views of the
three peaks of the Eiger, Monch and Jungfrau range as the train climbs
along the forested ledge above the Lauterbrunnen valley toward Mürren.
If traveling with luggage to stay overnight at the hotels in Murren, the
railway loads the bags onto an under carriage of the tram car and on the
train for you to retrieve on arrival.
The Mürrenbahn Aerial Tram station is located just opposite the main
train station of Lauterbrunnen, where the Berner Oberland Bahn trains from
Interlaken Ost connect with the trains of the Wengeralpbahn to Kleine Scheidegg
(and on to the Jungfraujoch) and Grindelwald, on the opposite sides of
the Lauterbrunnen Valley. The route operates generally in daylight hours,
the first runs about 6 am and the last around 7 pm. Individual ride tickets
or multi-ride tickets for the Mürrenbahn can be purchased at the tram
station or Murren station. Ticket price is 10. CHF one way and 20.80 CHF
round trip. The Mürrenbahn cable car and train are included free with
a Swiss Pass or other rail pass.
