Rhinoceros at Zurich ZooThe Zurich Zoo (Zoologischer Garten) is located in the hills above the city. One of the world’s leading zoo’s devoted to presenting in 340 different animal species within natural habitats. The exhibit areas which range from the grasslands of South America and the African Veldt, to the rain forests of Madagascar (yes, the place where those cartoon movie animals came from), featuring eco-systems where the animals, including endangered species can roam freely as they might in the wild. As well as an up close petting zoo for kids.

Masoala Rainforst Exhibot Zurich ZooThe Zurich Zoo first opened in 1929 and as of today has about 4,000 animals The Zurich Zoo’s most noted exhibit is the Masoala Rainforest. A recreation in the mid-Europe alitudes of the vanishing rainforest environment, and the centerpiece of zoo’s nature conservation strategy. In this transpalanted full scale rainforest, walking on boardwalks above the thick tender ground vegetation, you can discover why the forests are disappearing as well as learn about the habitats of the creatures which live in this unique world. The zoo has a donation program dedicated to preserving the Masoala National Park in Madagascar. From the other end of the world, the polar arctic, one of the zoo’s more popular events for kids is the Penguin Parade, which takes place daily just after lunchtime, if the air temperature is not too warm. New at the Zoo for 2012, is the Pantanal exhibit, an exotic wetlands landscape with flamingos, tapirs, squirrel monkeys and the prime attraction of young tiger cubs. In early October, the zoo presents the Madagascar Festival.

The Zurich Zoo is easily reached by city tram, from the Main Rail Station or other locations. The SBB Railaway has an offer which includes transit and the zoo. Admission is 22 chf for adults, 16 CHF for youth 16-25, 11 CHF for children/students 6-16, children under 6 are free. The Zurich Zoo is open 365 days a year, March–October 9.00 am to 6.00 pm, November–February 9.00 am to 5.00 pm – the Masoala Rainforest Hall from 10.00 am daily.
