SKI RESORT REGIONS IN SWITZERLAND
Jungfrau Ski Region
This area was virtually where alpine skiing was born, with a diverse
terrain and a number of pretty villages to base with a Jungfrau Top
Region Ski Pass. The full scope of the Jungfrau Ski Region covers over
a hundred miles of pistes, with an almost unlimited variety for intermediate
skier on a range of relaxing runs or more challenging routes down the
Kleine Scheidegg mountain. Highlights include the 4 mile run from Oberjoch
down to Grindelwald and the powder slopes from the Eigergletscher to
Wengernalp. Expert level can try the famed Lauberhorn World Cup Downhill
course, or the adrenaline rush Black Rock run, starting at the base
of the Eiger, or for the biggest thrill, if you dare, the almost vertical
'Kanonenrohr' in Mürren.
Grindelwald
Grindelwald is a postcard perfect resort in the Jungfrau region at the
base of the famed imposing Eiger North face. Very popular with British
and American visitors, Grindelwald is reached by the Jungfrau and Wengeralpbahn
railway from Interlaken Ost. Grindelwald has a cosmopolitan ambience
with a stunning mountain back drop. There are beginner slopes in Grindelwald
and just above the resort, including the new blue run at Oberjoch, and
a 'slow speed zone'. Quick progress can be made with lessons from the
excellent English speaking Ski Schools. The indoor Sports Center offers
a pool with a Wellness Center for sauna and massage, with a rink for
curling and ice skating. For families Grindelwald has an English speaking
kindergarten at the Bodmi nursery slopes and in January, the annual Ice
Sculpture garden.
Lauterbrunnen
The pretty village of Lauterbrunnen is at the center of a gorge of waterfalls,
below the mountain villages of Wengen and Mürren. Lauterbrunnen
is the rail connection point between the Jungfrau railway from Interlaken
and the Wengeralpbahn and Murrenbahn lines to the higher villages. Lauterbrunnen
offers a convenient central point for easy access to the entire Jungfrau
ski area and the links to the Jungfraujoch Railway to the “Top
of Europe” scenic excursion and the Schilthorn Aerial Cableway
to the Piz Gloria. You can even return to the village from Murren on
skis, via the longest run in the area, 7 miles from the Schilthorn to
Lauterbrunnen.
Wengen
Wengen is the carless village at the end of the Wengeralp cog railway
ideal for families. There are beginner slopes in Wengen with an English
speaking ski school. When the basic skills have been sharpened, graduate
to the Klein Scheidegg, up the Wengeralpbahn line.
