LUCERNE ATTRACTIONS
ROSENGART COLLECTION
The Rosengart Collection of Lucerne presents the works of classic modernism
through principally the works of Picasso and Klee. Angela Rosengart began
as an apprentice under her art dealer father and by the 1950’s
was co-owner in the Rosengart Gallery. Her father grew particulary close
to Pablo Picasso, with the back rooms of the gallery crowded with his
early, mostly ignored works. Georges Braque, Miro, Modigliani and Chagall,
and others joined the collection. For a while a number of the Picassos
were granted to the city of Lucerne and on display as the Picasso Donation
Museum, but in 2008, the Picasso Museum closed and the works joined the
rest of the collection in the Sammlung Rosengart Luzern, the Rosengart
Collection Art Museum in a former bank building on Pilatusstrasse.
The museum is just two blocks around the corner from the mail rail station
and near the Chapel Bridge. It has one of the most impressive collections
of Picasso and Paul Klee in private hands, with 32 Picasso paintings
and a hundred drawings and other works. Over 100 watercolors, paintings
and drawing Klee take up three quiet floors of the neo-classic building
once belonging to the Swiss National Bank. The Rosengart Collection,
a private museum - is open every day including holidays, from 10am – 6pm
April to October and 11am – 5pm, in winter months. The entry for
adults is 18 Swiss Francs. Rosengart
