THE FIRST CLIMB OF THE EIGER NORTH FACE
GRINDELWALD GETS A NEW MUSEUM EXHIBIT
It
is a mountain so legendary among mountain climbers that it has even inspired
a clothing line. The North Face of the Eiger, a shear granite
triangle in central Switzerland is one of the greatest north walls of
the Alps and one of the most challenging to conquer. In the 1930’s
the Eiger North Face was the ‘last problem’ of the Alps.
To climb this famous wall was the dream of many mountaineers from all
over Europe. The many tragedies and finally the successful climb are
reason enough to celebrate. In July of 2013, Grindelwald will mark the
75th Anniversary of the First Climb of the Eiger North Face.
It was the German-Austrian rope team of Anderl Heckmair and Ludwig Vörg,
Fritz Kasparek and Heinrich Harrer which reached the summit on the 24th
of July 1938 at 3:30 in the afternoon. 15.30. They were the first mountain
climbers men to successfully ascend the North Face of the Eiger. The
Eiger North Face can sometimes often be shrouded in clouds, but also
in its own mythology. For a decade the mountain was called impossible
to climb, dangerous, difficult and unpredictable. Throughout the 1930’s
the Eiger claimed the lives of nine alpine climbers, until finally bested
in 1938. The Eiger gained some further fame from a movie, with Clint
Eastwood on the rocky crags in “The Eiger Sanction”. And
in one of the more amazing feats of engineering, a railway to the top
of the Jungfrau was dug through the solid rock with windows now looking
right out of the mountain.
Grindelwald, the village at the foot of the Eiger will celebrate the
75th Anniversary of the First Climb of the Eiger North Face with a media
event in July, 2013. From the 9th to the 12th mountaineers and journalists
from all over the world will meet at the foot of the Eiger North Face.
And after all the hoopla of the anniversary a new attraction will remain
Eiger Attraction in the Grindelwald Museum
